Korea's Pressure Vessel inspection

Korea's Pressure Vessel Manufacturing Inspection, Installation Inspection, and Certification

The dictionary definition of certification is "the act of a public institution proving that a document or action has been carried out through a legitimate process." In the case of pressure vessel inspection, documents include drawings and various reports, while actions refer to inspections conducted during the manufacturing process, including procurement, in accordance with the quality manual.

An Inspection Test Plan (ITP) contains detailed procedures and required documents, clearly outlining the declared contents.

The public institutions responsible for pressure vessel certification in Korea include :

Korea Energy Agency (KEA),

Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA),

Korea Gas Safety Corporation (KGS).

These organizations operate as entrusted quasi-governmental agencies, meaning they execute duties delegated by law and are subject to national audits.

In practice, manufacturing inspections are conducted in three stages:

  1. Drawing inspection

  2. Welding (material) inspection

  3. Structural inspection

After the manufacturing inspection, a separate set of regulations applies to installation inspections for management and use.

Excluding special provisions established by specific laws, the above three major inspection institutions mostly are referenced in industrial sites. The most crucial factor when applying for an inspection is selecting the appropriate inspection agency, which should be considered at the design stage of the pressure vessel.

The reason public institutions must certify pressure vessels is due to the high-risk nature of pressure itself. Imagine the catastrophic consequences—both in material and human costs—if a vessel containing hazardous or toxic industrial substances were to explode.
